Description: Malibu Lumber Yard is a highly successful adaptive reuse development, converting a retired community staple into thriving high-end boutique shopping center in the heart of the Malibu shopping district. By preserving the historical significance and spirit of the site, the design team, and specifically the landscape architect resurrected the sites original character by using materials once produced at the Malibu Lumber Yard in a modern interpretation. In addition, the landscape architect implemented a sustainable overlay for the retail center by using low water use planting, using recycled materials, and drastically increasing the site’s overall permeability with decomposed granite and reclaimed wood decking. The landscape architect  addressed the tremendous challenges of inwardly-focused retail and smaller retail footprints by activating the internal courtyard and creating focal points on the second floor to drive retail traffic to those store locations with less prominent exposure. Retailers include James PerseAlice + Oliviaj.crew, and Cafe Habana among others.
