Served as Landscape Architect for the Malibu Lumber Yard Redevelopment www.themalibulumberyard.com – Design and construction services for a 2-acre lumber yard redevelopment located in the heart of the Malibu shopping district. Preserving the historical significance and spirit of the site, the design team resurrected the site’s original character by using materials once produced at the Malibu Lumber Yard in a modern interpretation. Wood and lumber were uniquely used in various forms such as tropical hardwood decking, blanketing the central space, pressure treated timbers were used in the decomposed granite parking lot as an alternative to parking striping, and reclaimed wood was used as cladding for building faces and walls. Another key feature to the sustainable overlay to the design was the replacement of 75% of the site’s impervious surface with pervious materials such as decomposed granite and free draining reclaimed wood decking.
Challenged with a retail core not oriented to the street, the design team used axes, focal points and geometry in the paving that suggests movement to help the retail gain exposure. In addition to an interior oriented organization, second floor retail was equally challenging. To help expose the second floor retail visually, the design team created an arched walkway on the second floor to create attention to look up and notice more store frontage.
